The biggest obstacle to tangible change is the lack of thought. People put more thought into what they're going to wear in the morning than what they're putting into their bodies. Labeling food will not do anything for people who don't read labels.

Re: where it all begins.

Reading this made me want to make some food, package it in appropriately small containers, put those containers in a brown paper bag, and then go sit on a picnic bench somewhere and eat it.

Re: fed up: school lunch project.

I would eat about 4 of those items total.

Re: what’s in your pocket?

mmmm hot pockets.

Re: science is cool.

I would still rather lick the bottom of my shoe than eat a hot dog.

Re: how clean is “pre-washed” salad?

I'm a big fan of washing my food. What's crazy is that some people just don't care. One of my old room mates laughed at me when I told her about the spinach recall. Her take on it was that if she got sick, she could sue.

Re: so what about those free-range chickens?

I find it hard to believe that free range chickens are actually allowed enough room to scurry around a lot pecking at bugs.

Re: spicing things up.

Cool Idea. There's so much hype on buying local, but it would be interesting to find out exactly how much worse it is for the environment. I mean if you're buying tomatoes from a farmer in the Peninsula, who has a small truck and makes lots of trips and has rudimentary tools, how does that compare to a big grower who may ship tomatoes in 18-wheelers from Mexico? I'll look into it.

Re: how clean is “pre-washed” salad?

Excellent, useful, scary, and funny, if you consider the high irony of "are we really so pessimistic about the food industry now that we breathe a sigh of relief when only traces of shit ..." funny. It makes me want to go back to high school and do something cool. I didn't really know you could do interesting things like this in high school. I was too busy thinking school was lame and trying to get by with as little effort as possible.
You gotta love the 'Let's Be Scientists' song playing on the outro.

Re: voting with our forks.

I guess his message is good, but isn't it sad that all people on Oprah want to hear is "Eat food, mostly plants, but not too much." If it makes you angry -- follow your instincts! As long as it doesn't make you bored. This is an important topic. I don't know if any great books have been written about food recalls -- the big, big picture -- but it would make a great book. If Rose George could write an erudite, exciting, page-turner about shit, you could write a book about food recalls.

Re: recalls galore

I had a friend that majored in "Food Politics."
